This One Settles Into Your Bones

Salvage the BonesSalvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Favorite of the Year Contender

Utterly amazing. This is a hard, heavy read -- unflinching, visceral, and devastating in a way that settles into your bones. It's a gut punch, but that brutality is the point, and it doesn't diminish the book's worth. If anything, it deepens it. Ward doesn't soften the world she's showing us, and she shouldn't. The pain, the hunger, the love, the inevitability of loss. All of it is earned.

The prose is harsh, yet undeniably beautiful. There were moments it reminded me of Zora Neale Hurston, but even that comparison feels unnecessary. This book stands entirely on its own. It doesn't need lineage or literary kinship to give it weight; it has gravity all by itself.

This is the kind of book that hurts to read and stays with you long after, not because it wants to shock you, but because it tells the truth.
