My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (3.5, rounded up)

This was a lovely piece of historical literary fiction. The prose was elegant and soothing, with a gentle, meandering pace that never tipped into boredom. The ending felt clean and satisfying, leaving behind a quiet sense of whimsy.

Words of Wisdom (p. 260):

As a quick aside, let me observe that in moments of high emotion—whether they're triggered by anger or envy, humiliation or resentment—if the next thing you're going to say makes you feel better, then it's probably the wrong thing to say.

Overall, while I wasn’t completely bowled over, I was content… Kontent, even. (I couldn’t resist.)
