I’ll Probably Keep Reading, Let’s Be Honest

City of the Lost (Rockton, #1)City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a bit of a mixed experience for me. I'm a big fan of Kelley Armstrong, but this isn't my favorite genre, and I could feel that while reading.

There's a lot here that works: the isolated setting is compelling, the premise is intriguing, and it definitely lays a strong foundation for a continuing series. But at the same time, it almost felt like too much was being thrown into one story. Between the more extreme elements, it started to stretch believability in a way that pulled me out of it a bit (and I actually prefer fantasy overall!) I think I would have actually preferred a more grounded, straightforward mystery within this setting.

That said, I didn't dislike it at all. It kept my attention, and I'm curious enough about the world and characters that I'd consider continuing the series. I just hope things tighten up a bit going forward.
