Satire Gone Wild

Black BuckBlack Buck by Mateo Askaripour
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I've been sitting with Black Buck for a minute now, trying to figure out how I actually feel about it and the honest answer is: I'm still not entirely sure.

It starts strong, the opening hooked me... Darren's voice is SHARP, engaging, and darkly funny, and watching him get pulled into a hyper-aggressive startup is both compelling and VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. I was all in for where we seemed to be going.

But.... somewhere along the way... it veers. HARD... like... off a cliff.

The tone starts to feel less satire, and more absurd. Maybe I'm too far removed from this "startup world" to see it, but instead of sharpening the critique, it made it feel... unmoored (and we all know how much a love a moor, Wuthering Heights, I'm looking at you)...

There's some powerful ideas here, but the execution felt unbalanced. I don't regret the read, there's a lot too chew on, but I just feel it lacked the focus to really tear me apart.

Really, this is a 2.5 star read for me... but I'm being generous here on Goodreads .. the "lack of half-star" site...
