The Limits of Protection
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi CoatesMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I weighed my thoughts carefully on this book before attempting to write this review, because this is a book that is intensely personal and rooted in a lived experience that I can never truly understand. Even so, it is impossible not to feel the emotional weight of what Coates is expressing... the anger, grief, fear, and love are threaded through every page.
The part that resonated most deeply with me was the perspective of parenthood: the aching desire to keep your child safe in a world that offers no such guarantees. That fear is rendered with brutal honesty, and while my circumstances differ, that instinct to protect, and hope, and still brace yourself against what you cannot control, felt universal in a way that was both devastating and clarifying.
I recommend that everyone read it.
